Til I Hear It From You

The Curse of the Crying Boy Painting.. ehem

Do you happen to know anything about "cursed items"? I know its very odd for me to talk about it on my blog because I never wrote anything about myths. superstitious beliefs and the paranormal entities. The reason for bringing this up is that I was searching for good paintings with good stories behind the artwork when I accidentally clicked a link that brought me to an article about a "cursed painting".

There is a myth in England about a particular painting showing a crying boy. The myth is that the painting is cursed, bringing bad luck to those who buy and own the painting, usually in the form of mysterious fires destroying entire rooms except for the painting.

According to the article the mystery began around 1985, when several mysterious reports about fires happened around England. But although the rooms of the house and all the items were damaged the painting of the Crying Boy escaped unscathed. A famous newspaper in England called "SUN" ran stories about how everything in the home was consumed by fire except for a painting of a crying boy. There were at that time more than one of these paintings around and each seemed to have the same effect. The home and all contents would be totally destroyed but the painting of the little crying boy would not show any sign at all of going through a fire. After one month of hearing all the tales, the “Sun” gave their readers the chance to bring their crying boy paintings and agreed to have a very large bonfire to rid everyone of this cursed or jinxed painting.

All paintings that were brought to the newspaper were in fact burned and everyone rejoiced. However the story goes on and on, numerous reports about fires with paintings of the crying boy found undamaged in the fire site.

What about now? hehe.. Well, roughly 8 years ago, when I went home from the province, in one of the stop-overs (resto/souvenir shops) of our bus, lets hide the name of the bus company as "winner", I remember seeing a painting of a crying boy in one of the walls of the shop, its seems that the painting is not for sale because of the dust all over it. I will never forget it because its very interesting and so emotional, as if its asking for sympathy. myths, myths, myths.. hmmm....
